The 1.5 acre Barrington Dog Park, situated within the Barrington Recreation Center of Brentwood Village in West Los Angeles, is a relaxed, clean park that features fenced-in runs for both large and small dogs.
There are plenty of trees, tables and benches and water for both humans and dogs. Both runs are well-maintained and the people and their animals tend to be friendly and non-aggressive. The large dog run is actually two open, yet separate areas, allowing for those dogs that like to run with the pack or prefer one-on-one activity.
The Barrington Recreation Center features a large parking lot, bathrooms, baseball, football and soccer fields; basketball, volleyball and tennis courts; and a children’s playground.Note that the Dog Park is actually located next to the post office, on the opposite side of the street, from the main Barrington Recreation Center, located at 333. S. Barrington Avenue. This entire area surrounding the park can often be seen with dogs being walked along the sidewalks.
Off-Leash, Fenced Runs
If you are looking for a beautiful place to take your pooch for a stroll or to let them run free to get some exercise, this is an excellent place to go. There are two fenced, off-leash runs that are both well-kept – one for smaller or timid dogs and the other for larger dogs.
The majority of the small run is not shade covered except for one corner. There is a large shade tree here with a bench, so it is often where you will find owners and pets congregating. There is a strict limit for this run of 30 pounds or less and no more than 3 dogs per owner.
The large run offers many shady areas, and while it is technically for large pets, small dogs are still welcome. If you do bring a small dog into this run, just be sure to keep a close eye on them if there are others around.
The extra amenities for your pooch at this park are really nice too. You’ll find drinking fountains on concrete pads that are great for cooling down or just grabbing a drink in the hot California sun.
You will also find many dog waste stations through the runs. Although you can certainly use bags at the park, you actually won’t need them if you visit this place because they have a rake and scooping pan at most of the waste stations that are used for cleanup. Since this is something that you’re required to do by law here in L.A., it is really nice to have this extra perk.
The first Saturday of the month you can get vaccines for your dog at Barrington Park from 3:30 until 5:00 PM. This can be really convenient to visit the park and get vaccines for your pet at the same time, although these mobile vaccine clinics are often very crowded.
If you’re visiting this park in the morning or afternoon hours on a hot day, you’ll love the shade here, especially in the large dog run. There are some areas with tall trees next to them that cast large shadows over the area that are big enough to play fetch with your dog while you both stay cool. Along the edge next to the fields there is also a nice shadecloth covered bench if you need to sit down while your canine friend runs around.
Barrington Recreation Center Features
Beyond the dog runs, there are many other things to do at this particular park and lots of beautiful scenery to enjoy. A number of unique shade trees can be found scattered about with benches underneath. The Rec. Center across the road from the park has many scheduled activities and restroom facilities around the back.
One of the best things about this park is the nearby scenery. Try taking your pooch for a leashed walk with a harness or collar along the sidewalks around the area to enjoy the beautiful landscaping. This is something that you will commonly find others doing. It can be a good idea to use a backup dog GPS collar in case they get away from you so you can quickly locate them, especially since this place is around some city streets that can have traffic.
You can also find soccer fields, tennis courts, and a kids playground that are all very well maintained and modern. Also be sure to stop by the community garden – look for the fence with the hanging signs and red flowers growing through it. At first glance, it may look like a bunch of trash, but the creators of this garden have actually recycled old materials in a very beautiful way.
