Westminster Dog Park
Venice’s only off-leash dog park is a small, scratched-out spot right in the heart of this eclectic community. Just a block from the beach and within walking distance to all the amenities that Abbott Kinney and Main Street have to offer, it certainly is convenient; but its ratty appearance and transient homeless population, is not for everyone. Even though it is off-leash, leashes and a dog collar or harness is needed between the parking lot and the fenced area.
There is only one fenced-in area, so if you have a smaller dog, be particularly mindful – Depending on the time of day, there can be unruly, aggressive dogs that control the dog run. Nevertheless, you just might find yourself alone during the off-peak hours, so if you’re in the neighborhood, it may be worth checking out. There is a sitting area under a small pergola, a watering fountain and garbage cans available; And in spite of a welcome mixture of wood chips and dirt, it seems that dog owners are not always taking care to pick up after their animals.
The one positive, and it’s a big plus, particularly if you’ve ever tried to find a parking spot in Venice, is the small parking lot with it’s entrance on Pacific Street. Unfortunately, in spite of the warning signs, parking is not always enforced, so spaces can quickly fill up.
Dog Park Features
Even though this place is more ratty compared with some of the other parks in Los Angeles, there are still some decent amenities here to make your trip more pleasant. At the top of the hill in the fenced enclosure you’ll find picnic tables and a wooden pergola to provide shade.
Since it is required by law that you clean up after your pet’s waste, there are two options here for you to choose from: waste bags from the take a bag station (when available) and the pooper scooper at the trash can in the dog run.
The park itself is a large dirt and wood chip field that is on the side and top of a hill. The amenities are located at the top, while the better shade trees are found at the bottom of the hill.
You can often find a wide variety of breeds here playing together or simply getting some exercise running around free of their leash. While some nearby neighborhoods are not the best, you do have some very affluent homes near Venice Beach, so you get quite a mixture of owners and their dogs here.
Park Rules, Hours & Other Important Info
Just like any other dog park, there are rules and various laws that you and your pet are expected to follow to else you risk being cited and fined. The rules sign at Westminster is fairly standard in the Los Angeles area. A large sign advertises the number to call the park director if you have any concerns or questions about this place.
The main thing that is a bit confusing is the actual operating hours because there are conflicting signs posted around in multiple locations. One such location, as pictured below, actually has two different sets of hours on the same pole. However, if you look closely, you can see that the lower sign that says the park is closed from 10:30pm until 5:00am is faded and older looking, so it is assumed that the top sign is newer and represents the actual hours, open sunrise until sunset.
To get into Westminster Off-Leash Dog Park and the dedicated parking lot for this place, you’ll find the entrance on Pacific Avenue at the intersection of Clubhouse Court. If you follow Clubhouse Ct., it will take you down to Venice Beach just a few blocks away from the Venice Skate Park.
